RTCM 2007 May 6-11, 2007St. Pete Beach, Florida2007 marked the third year that Shine Micro has hosted a hospitality suite at RTCM, and the fourth year that Shine Micro President Mark Johnson was asked to give a presentation on the progress of AIS technology. The topic of Mr. Johnson's presentation this year was "Tropo-AIS", which refers to reliably receiving signals bounced off of the troposphere, which drastically increases the monitoring range of AIS Receivers and Networks. The Tropo-AIS presentation went hand in hand with the new product announced
by Shine Micro at RTCM 07: the RadarPlus SM1680 Phase-Synchronous Octal
AIS Receiver Array. Nick-named "The Octopus", the SM1680 incorporates
4 pairs of high-sensitivity AIS receivers.
Also decorating the Shine Micro booth at RTCM 07 was the exciting new website MMSIspace.com: an online community for boaters based around MMSI numbers. MMSIspace is a community site that acts much like a "phone book" of MMSI numbers. With integrated Live Maps and interactive functions such as the ability to post comments and photos about vessels, MMSIspace is both a useful tool and fun online forum. All vessels operating on the high seas require a Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) number to participate in the Global Maritime Distress & Safety System (GMDSS). In addition to GMDSS participation the MMSI number also serves as a unique identifier of the vessel for all communications.
